House Bill 488 as passed the House of Representatives extends the state death benefit to include (1) emergency medical services personnel employed by the state, county, or municipality and (2) first responders who die as a result of COVID-19 or complications therefrom, under certain conditions. This bill would increase the obligations of the State General Fund by $124,331 to $134,897 for each state death benefit payment made to a surviving beneficiary or dependent of any such first responder dependent upon the year in which the death occurred.
